In an interview with Wall Street Journal editor in chief Emma Tucker, reporter Evan Gershkovich details his arrest, how he survived 16 months inside Russia’s prisons, and the rising dangers journalists face worldwide.
“I started treating it like a reporting exercise,” said Gershkovich. “I kind of felt like this would be the most interesting way to spend my time.”
He used actual notebooks and would copy them and send them out to his lawyers. Before they were sent out, Russian authorities would read them.
Gershkovich said he wasn’t “completely blind” to the risk of being arrested as a foreign correspondent, but didn’t think it would happen. He was confronted while meeting with a source.
“Right before I’m dragged onto the ground, the source steps back into the crowd,” said Gershkovich.
