WSJ seeks an Africa reporter

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an energetic, experienced and ambitious reporter to cover Africa in a crucial moment for the continent.

African economies are recovering from the pandemic slowdown, with many struggling to pay off near-record amounts of debt. A string of new wars and the escalation of old conflicts, from Sudan to the Sahel, have created some of the world’s biggest humanitarian crises and raised doubts about Africa’s ability to capitalize on the potential demographic dividend of its youthful populace.

In addition to China, the U.S. is now competing for influence—and the minerals critical to the global energy transition—with a group of middle powers such as Russia to the United Arab Emirates.

Africa accounts for a tiny part of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions—just 3.8%. But the continent is already feeling a disproportionate impact from climate change. In places like the Sahel and Nigeria’s green belt, the shifts are contributing to armed conflict.

We are looking for a skilled writer and reporter who can tell the big, distinctive stories about this vital region.

You will:

  • Cover all of Sub-Saharan Africa, home to roughly 15% of the world’s people.
  • Work closely with editors in London and New York to produce sharp, globe-spanning coverage
  • Seek new ways of doing our journalism digitally and visually

You have:

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Sound news judgment and a high metabolism for news and enterprise stories.
  • A proven track record of dominating veins of coverage in geopolitics, business and economics
  • The very highest standards of excellence, and a commitment to ambitious and distinctive journalism.

The position will be based in one of the continent’s main hubs and will report to the Africa bureau chief
