Wall Street Journal reporter Jimmy Vielkind is joining WNYC to cover New York state issues in its Albany bureau.
At The Journal, he covered New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. His stories often looked at the impact of state policies on the tristate region as well as how New York City and surrounding areas were changed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Vielkind joined the Journal in 2018 as a reporter covering New York state politics and government and previously authored the weekly State Street politics column. He has been reporting at the New York State Capitol for more than a decade, including stints as Politico’s Albany bureau chief and as a reporter for his hometown paper, the Albany Times Union.
He was part of a team of Journal reporters that won a Gerald Loeb Award for coverage of Amazon’s HQ2 process and led a Journal team honored by the New York Press Club for articles about Andrew Cuomo’s downfall.
He studied urban planning at Columbia University and SUNY Albany.
