WSJ names McGinty its science bureau chief

Jo Craven McGinty has been named the science bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal.

She has been senior editor for talent for the past two years.

McGinty has been writing The Numbers column for The Journal. Before joining the Journal in 2014, McGinty was a data reporter at the New York Times, where her subjects included disparities in hospital billings, deadly railroad crossings and favoritism among banks in the Fed’s lending program.

Earlier in her career, McGinty was a database specialist at the Washington Post, where her work led to the 1999 Pulitzer for Public Service and the Selden Ring Award for Investigative Reporting for a series on the use of deadly force by D.C. police.

McGinty has also worked as an enterprise reporter at Newsday, as a professor of computer-assisted reporting at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and as adviser to Investigative Reporters and Editors and the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting.

Her first reporting and editing jobs were with the Burlington Times-News, The Durham Sun and the Durham Herald-Sun, all in her native North Carolina.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
