WSJ hires Ramzy to cover China

The Wall Street Journal has hired Austin Ramzy to cover China.

He will be reporting on how the country’s growing economic, diplomatic and military strength interacts with the world.

Ramzy was a Hong Kong reporter for The New York Times, focusing on coverage of the city and also of regional and breaking news. He previously covered major events around Asia from Taipei and Beijing.

He has covered the 2015 election in Myanmar, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and mass protest movements in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where he was based in 2014.

Previously, Ramzy was a Beijing correspondent for Time magazine from 2007 to 2013, where he covered the Beijing Olympics, the Wenchuan earthquake and China’s response to the 2007-08 financial crisis. He started at the magazine, where he worked from 2003 to 2007, as a Hong Kong-based reporter.

Ramzy started in journalism as a reporter at two newspapers in Washington state, The Marysville Globe and The Peninsula Daily News.

He received a bachelor’s degree in Asian studies from Middlebury College and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley.
