WSJ hires Audi as economics editor

Wall Street Journal editor in chief Emma Tucker sent out the following:

Tammy Audi

Dear all,

I’m delighted to announce that after a two-year stint as enterprise editor for the New York Times National desk, Tammy Audi is rejoining the Journal as Economics Editor in New York.

Most of the newsroom knows Tammy from her four years as deputy editor of enterprise, where she helped lead numerous memorable stories, particularly around Covid and its personal and economic implications. Tammy’s great sense of humor was often on display with her talent for turning almost anything into an a-hed, sometimes mere minutes before deadline. But she is best known for her ability to  inspire and mentor reporters across the newsroom.

At the New York Times, Tammy directed some of the biggest stories during her tenure, including abortion coverage before, during and after the overturning of Roe v. Wade and helping lead U.S. coverage of the war in Gaza. She recently published a magazine piece about an immigrant who after joining the U.S. military was accused of espionage, following a case she first covered with the Detroit Free Press 20 years ago.

Tammy joined the Journal in 2007, as a reporter covering the gambling industry and national news including the Gabby Giffords shooting and the San Bernardino terror attack. She also directed our U.S. News coverage as West Coast bureau chief where she ran big stories such as the Las Vegas shooting.

In addition to the Detroit Free Press, she has also worked at The Philadelphia Inquirer and smaller outlets in her native New England like The Brookline Citizen and The Danvers Herald.

Tammy will officially return to the newsroom in mid-May.
