Wired executive editor Brian Barrett sent to staff this morning:
Hi all,
I am thrilled to share that Maddy Varner has joined WIRED as a senior writer focused on investigations.
Maddy is a data journalist and technology reporter who has worked at some of your favorite investigative outlets. At the Markup, she covered labor, education, and politics; her facility with both data sets and FOIA requests resulted in all kinds of impactful scoops. Before that she was a researcher at ProPublica, where she was on a team that won the Loeb Award for beat reporting in 2017 for “Monetizing Hate,” a series that examined Facebook’s ad practices. Most recently, Maddy has served as a technologist in residence at the Federal Trade Commission, giving her an inside perspective on a multitude of topics that are core to our interests.
While Maddy will sit with the security team, she’ll be working across all desks to wrangle data, build tools, file records requests, and elevate our investigative efforts more broadly. She’ll be based in our New York City office, and starts … today.
Please join me in welcoming Maddy!
