Wired hires Schiffer as director of business and industry

Zöe Schiffer

Wired global editorial director Katie Drummond shared with staff this morning:

All –

I am tremendously excited to share that Zöe Schiffer is joining WIRED as our Director, Business & Industry, reporting to Brian Barrett and joining Tim and Mike to complete our newsroom leadership team.

Zoë is currently the managing editor of Platformer, a must-read for thousands of people looking to understand the changing landscape of tech. She’s also the author of Extremely Hardcore: Inside Elon Musk’s Twitter, an expertly reported book on Musk’s turbulent takeover of every journalist’s (former) favorite social media platform. Previously, Zoë was a senior reporter at The Verge, where she covered — and broke plenty of news about — the labor movement in Silicon Valley.

The minute we spoke to Zöe, it was clear that we’d found our person. She is a journalist with a deep well of expertise on the tech industry, and the drive, urgency, creativity, and gravitas to meet this moment, and lead our Business reporters and editors across the US and UK to do the same. Documenting the exploits and foibles of Silicon Valley’s companies and characters — and doing it better than anybody else — is a lynchpin of our overall editorial offering, and there’s never been a wilder time to do it.

Zoë will be based on the west coast, and officially starts in January. Before then, you can hear her as a cohost of Uncanny Valley, our new flagship podcast that launches *today.*

Please join me in giving Zoë a very warm welcome to WIRED — she is copied on this email!

I could not be more excited about what Zoë, Louise, Natasha, and the rest of the WIRED Business team will get up to next year.

Best,
Katie
