The following was sent out from The Washington Post:
The Washington Post Helping Hand, a charitable giving initiative, raised over $410,000 for three D.C.-area nonprofits: Bread for the City, Friendship Place and Miriam’s Kitchen. The Post drew donations through an eight-week holiday giving campaign that included weekly columns by Local Columnist John Kelly about the inspiring ways these organizations are making a difference in the lives of people in the D.C.-area community. The Robert I. Schattner Foundation contributed $150,000 to Helping Hand for a second consecutive year.
The record-setting season’s donations went to directly to support each selected beneficiary. In addition to providing families with a turkey, groceries and a debit card for the holidays, their year-round services include the following:
- Bread for the City provides food, clothing, medical care and legal and social services to reduce the burden of poverty.
- Friendship Place empowers individuals to rebuild their lives, find homes, get jobs and reconnect with friends, family and the community, permanently.
- Miriam’s Kitchen engages its guests with healthy, made-from-scratch meals and connects them with personalized social services that help them increase their income, improve their health and obtain a safe, permanent home.
Since 2014, The Washington Post’s Helping Hand has facilitated more than $2.2 million directly to human service nonprofit organizations in the Washington, D.C. region. To learn more about Helping Hand, visit www.posthelpinghand.com.
