Dawn Kopecki, corporate finance editor for the Americas at Reuters, sent out the following on Thursday:

I’m pleased to announce that Echo Wang has joined the deals team as editor-in-charge of M&A coverage.

No stranger to the deals team, Echo previously led Reuters’ IPO coverage. She’s already set the bar high in her first week, breaking what may be the biggest M&A story in history: SpaceX’s acquisition of xAI. She has a long track record of landing major scoops, breaking OpenAI’s plans to go public and the sale of OnlyFans last year.

Her work spans high-stakes corporate dealmaking as well as ambitious enterprise reporting, including her coverage of TikTok and Grindr during the first Trump administration. Working closely with colleagues across bureaus, she helped position Reuters as the leading source on the evolving story of U.S.-China decoupling — work that earned her Reuters’ Reporter of the Year award in 2020. That approach was also on display in her Arm IPO coverage, where she led a series of scoops, behind-the-scenes reporting and market analysis that made Reuters the authoritative source for 2023’s biggest stock market debut.

Echo moved to New York in 2017 with two suitcases and a passion for journalism. She joined Reuters through the Overseas Press Club Foundation fellowship program in 2019 after completing her master’s degree at Columbia University.

She began her career as a travel writer for Lonely Planet from the rolling hills of the Tibetan plateau. She also worked on NPR’s The Indicator podcast and reported on Chinese business for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. She holds a master’s degree in communications and comparative literature from Shanghai International Studies University, and grew up in a small town outside Shanghai.

When she’s not chasing deals, you can find Echo in the kitchen cooking up a storm or hustling on the tennis court.

Please join me in congratulating Echo on her promotion. I’m excited to see what we else she and the team will do together this year.

Sincerely – Dawn
