Twenty-one biz and tech news staffers affected by The Messenger’s closing

Here’s a list of the business and technology news staffers at The Messenger, which announced Wednesday it was closing:

Editors

Business and finance editor Ciro Scotti. Recently, he was a senior project manager at Blue Heron Research Partners, where he worked for five years. Before that, Scotti served as deputy editor, the Americas at Reuters.

David Ewalt oversaw tech and science coverage at The Messenger. He previously was editor in chief at Gizmodo and worked at The Wall Street Journal as rankings editor and at Reuters as special projects editor.

Dawn Kopecki was deputy business editor. Recently, she was a senior editor for politics, health and science, and investigations at CNBC.

Senior editor Tom Lowry, who had been editor in chief of Skift, a website focused on the business of travel, as well as its managing editor.

Aaron Rennie, breaking news editor on the business news team. Previously, he was at The Wall Street Journal, where he worked for more than a decade.

Bridget O’Brian was hired from CNN Business to be breaking news editor its business news desk. O’Brian had been a section editor at CNN Business, where she was responsible for stories about the economy and the markets.

Helen Reis, who was personal finance editor. She previously worked at Bloomberg News and The Balance.

Lynnley Browning was running its wealth and team. She had been the Financial Planning wealth editor covering taxes, asset management and investment strategies for the publication.

Reporters

Justin Bachman covered airlines as a senior reporter. He previously was an aviation and aerospace reporter based in Dallas at Bloomberg News and Businessweek. Bachman covered airlines, general aviation, NASA, the commercial space industry, defense, and commercial drones.

Christian Berthelsen was reporter, financial investigations. Recently, he covered financial crime and illicit finance, including national security and international tax evasion for Bloomberg.

Patrick Cooley was covering agriculture and commodities. Cooley has been freelancing for Industry Dive, but he was a business reporter for The Columbus Dispatch for more than four years covering agriculture

Reporter Rocio Fabbro recently graduated from New York University. She interned at Foreign Policy magazine and recently participated in the Politico Journalism Institute. She also interned at CNBC and was a research assistant at First Amendment Watch.

Reporter Will Gavin was covering breaking business news. Gavin most recently was a part-time assignment editor for WTNH-TV in New Haven, Connecticut.

Eric Geller was a senior reporter covering cybersecurity. He previously covered that beat for Politico.

Senior reporter Kathleen Howley covered personal finance. She previously worked at Bloomberg and HousingWire.

Sasha Jones was covering national real estate stories. Jones had been a reporter at the New York Business Journal, an American City Business Journals publication, covering economic development.

Reporter Lily Meier had been an investigator for the Mintz Group since November 2021 before joining The Mwessenger. Meier had recently announced she was joining the rotational program at Bloomberg News.

Reporter Jackie Snow covered artificial intelligence and tech. Previously, Snow was an associate editor, artificial intelligence at MIT Technology Review and worked as an associate video producer at Fast Company.

Richard Teitelbaum, who has been a senior contributing writer for Institutional Investor for the past six years, was an enterprise writer. He previously was a news editor at The Wall Street Journal covering corporate finance.

Reporter Francisco Velasquez, who had been at CoinDesk since February 2022. He previously interned at Inc. magazine and CNBC. He also worked at Borderless Magazine. Velasquez is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and CUNY’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism.

Ben White, formerly Politico Pro’s chief economic correspondent and author of the “Morning Money” column covering the nexus of finance and public policy, was its chief Wall Street correspondent.
