Alec Davis, the editor in chief of Pitchbook News, is stepping down after five years to take on a new role at the organization and is being succeeded by James Thorne.

Thorne is a Seattle-based managing editor overseeing PitchBook’s venture capital coverage and data journalism initiatives. He previously reported for GeekWire, Reuters, CNBC and Source Media.

A native of Colorado, Thorne graduated from Boston College and received his master’s degree in business journalism from New York University.

“In this role, I’ll be writing deeply reported articles on a range of global themes in technology, the energy transition and the expansion of private markets into new channels,” Davis wrote on LinkedIn. “I’m super-excited to be creative as a writer once again.”

Davis has been a financial journalist since the mid-1990s. Alec previously was an editor at The Wall Street Journal and was a founding editor of MarketWatch. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history and journalism from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a master’s degree in international politics from American University.
