The Messenger hires Powers to cover tech policy

Benjamin Powers

New website The Messenger has hired Benjamin Powers from The Grid to cover tech policy.

He has been at the Grid since September 2021 exploring the interconnection of technology and privacy within major stories. He focuses on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and how privacy concerns are reshaping technology regulations, among other topics. He has also covered cryptocurrencies and emerging digital economies.

He was previously a privacy reporter at CoinDesk. His writing about technology, policing and the military has appeared in Rolling Stone, the Wall Street Journal, CityLab, Mother Jones and Paste Magazine.

He is a graduate of Bard College and CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
