Sharon Lam, a senior editor on the business desk at The Logic, sent out the following on Thursday:
We know that our readers are eager to see us deliver more reporting and analysis of corporate Canada, on Bay Street and beyond. That’s why I’m delighted to announce the expansion of The Logic’s business desk.
Anita Balakrishnan will be moving to the business desk for a new beat focusing on Canada’s professional services sector. Her coverage will include the Canadian operations of the big global accounting and consulting firms, as well as the country’s legal industry, including its big law firms and legal tech upstarts. These companies employ huge numbers of people in Canada and touch almost every aspect of the country’s economy. They are on the front lines of digital transformation, wrestling with the promise of AI.
Anita has covered the auto industry and automotive technology since joining The Logic in 2021, delivering award-winning coverage of Canada’s efforts to build an electric vehicle supply chain and industry. She will continue to cover mining companies and critical minerals through the lens of M&A and capital markets. Joanna Smith will take over duties reporting on Canada’s auto industry as part of her coverage of North American trade and the renegotiation of USMCA.
Chaimae Chouiekh joins The Logic as a business reporter. Chaimae comes to The Logic following a summer internship with Bloomberg News in Toronto. She will cover Canada’s financial institutions and capital markets.
Before joining Bloomberg, Chaimae was a student fellow at the Global Reporting Centre, and held roles at Global News and CBC. Chaimae’s reporting, which has spanned Canadian finance, trade and social justice, has been recognized with both regional and national journalism awards. Fluent in multiple languages, she holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Al Akhawayn University in Morocco and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of British Columbia. She joins us on Oct. 20 and will be based in Toronto.
On the business desk, Chaimae and Anita will work alongside Claire Brownell, The Logic’s future of finance reporter, whose coverage is focused on how the financial system is adapting to technological change. Together, they will serve The Logic’s readers by delivering exclusive reporting and insights into Canada’s evolving financial landscape and those behind it shaping Canada’s economy and the working lives of people across the country.
Please join me in welcoming Chaimae and congratulating Anita on her new role.
