Jessica Lessin, the founder, editor in chief and CEO of The Information, joined “The Grill Room” podcast host Dylan Byers to explain the growth behind her 13-year-old technology news site.
Lessin recounted a trip to China 10 years ago that led her to focus coverage on the country, noting the best way to understand how to better report a story is to see it first-hand.
“Imagine if I hadn’t taken that trip,” said Lessin, a former Wall Street Journal reporter. “…Now, you know, our amazing reporters there are at the center of the China Ai story. They were the first to report about DeepSeek.”
The Information has also pushed into finance reporting to track AI’s reshaping of Wall Street.
The company’s revenue and profit have increased 30 percent in the first half of the year, with growth coming from advertising and sponsorships. Subscriptions are holding up, although she said, “It’s definitely the harder part of the business.” Overall growth in 2025 was in the “high 20s,” she said.
“It’s all powered by the journalism,” she added. “People are coming to us because we’re consistently staying ahead of the cycle.”
