The Hill hires business and finance editor, names assistant editor

The Hill has hired a business and finance editor and named an assistant business and finance editor.

Riley Gutiérrez McDermid has been hired as The Hill’s new business and finance editor. She will lead the finance and business teams, as will the tech team.

McDermid has been a money and tech editor for USA Today, where she coordinated coverage for money, personal finance and markets reporters in the San Francisco Bay area. She previously worked as markets editor at The Street, West Coast editor for Bisnow and digital editor for the San Francisco Business Times.

Sylvan Lane, a veteran Hill reporter, has been promoted to a new assistant business and finance editor role.

Lane will be closely overseeing business and finance reporters and working to increase the strength of The Hill’s daily business reporting.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
