South Carolina names Morrow biz journalism scholarship winners

The 2022 recipients of the David J. Morrow Scholarship for Business Journalism at the University of South Carolina are Jade Crooks, Riley Edenbeck, Tyler Fedor, Addison Hinkle, Brook McDaniel and Stephen Pastis.

The Morrow Scholarship is a partnership between the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina and the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing. The award is given annually to students studying business journalism at USC. The scholarship helped bring the students to the launch of Skill Up @ SABEW fall workshop on Oct. 14 at The Wall Street Journal headquarters in New York City.

Crooks and Pastis received the scholarship for a second time. Both attended SABEW’s annual conference virtually.

Crooks is a senior journalism major with a minor in business administration. As assistant copy desk chief for the student-run The Daily Gamecock, she edits stories, newsletters, and tweets for an audience of more than 48,000 people. This past summer, Crooks learned multimedia skills covering Spain’s soccer culture in Barcelona. She also helps students land their dream jobs at the USC Career Center.

Pastis, a senior multimedia journalism student, is also pursuing a minor in political science. He currently works as the arts and culture section editor for The Daily Gamecock and hopes to work for a national outlet covering politics or technology.

Edenbeck is a junior mass communications student who recently discovered her passion for business journalism. The Chicago native is an arts & culture section writer for the Daily Gamecock and is a member of the Zeta Phi Eta professional communications fraternity. She hopes to pursue her master’s degree in journalism and become a business reporter.

Fedor, a senior journalism student, had his work covering the Columbia Mall shooting earlier this year appear in The New York Times. The managing editor at The Daily Gamecock also covered the controversial presidency of Bob Caslen at USC. He also freelances for his local paper in Florida when back home.

Hinkle is a former writer for The Daily Gamecock and former Garnet and Black magazine copy chief. The Toledo, Ohio, native aspires to be a breaking news journalist. She has interned for multiple news organizations, including the Sylvania Advantage and the Leelanau Enterprise, voted one of the best newspapers in Michigan.

McDaniel, a senior communications major, values the opportunity for creation, expression, and interaction with multiple audiences that communications and journalism give. She’s also a college cheerleader pursuing a minor in event and venue management.

The scholarship is named in honor of David J. Morrow, an alumnus of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at USC. Morrow was a prominent financial journalist who died of pancreatic cancer in January 2010 at age 49.

At the time of his death, Morrow was a SABEW board member and the first Donald W. Reynolds Endowed Chair in Business Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. Before accepting that appointment, he served eight years as editor-in-chief of TheStreet.com. Morrow’s business journalism career also included stints at The New York Times, Smart Money and Fortune magazines, and the Detroit Free Press.
