Silicon Valley Business Journal editor J. Jennings Moss writes about his departure from the American City Business Journals publication, effective Feb. 2, noting he’s “laying myself off.”

Moss writes, “In the post-Covid period, when people started coming back into the office, I wrote a couple of times in this space about how I was feeling. In September 2022, I shared that I had all the classic symptoms of burnout. It felt good getting it out there, acknowledging the struggles and saying I was ready to put in the work to turn it around.

“But, in truth, it never did. I couldn’t get back to a place of feeling connected to the Silicon Valley community like I had when I first arrived in 2017 after two decades of living and working in New York City. At first, the barrier could easily be blamed on Covid. But when that didn’t lift, as I felt myself getting further and further behind on emails, phone calls, human connections, all while sticking to the relentless deadlines of the news business, I knew it was time for a change.

“I did what just about any career expert would tell you not to do. I gave notice without a new job lined up and without a big pool of surplus money to rely on. I was honest with my employers at American City Business Journals, a company I’ve had the great fortune to be at for more than 13 years, about what was going on. And I gave them a three-month heads-up, time to help them find a successor and space for me to close things out without feeling rushed.”
