Kevin Delaney, editor in chief of The San Francisco Standard, sent out the following announcement:

Hello Standard colleagues –

I’m excited to announce that John Mulholland is joining The Standard as managing editor. In that role, he’ll oversee daily news coverage and lead our newsroom’s efforts to become even more of a must-read.

John comes to us with world-class experience as a manager of journalists and editor of high-impact journalism—and has long ties to California, where he studied and has been living the past few years.

John earlier was editor-in-chief of The Guardian’s US edition, guiding its NYC-headquartered newsroom through a period of editorial expansion and audience growth. In that role John oversaw news, investigations, opinion, overall editorial strategy, and its D.C. and S.F. bureaus, while working closely with business-side colleagues to strengthen The Guardian’s reach and sustainability.

Prior to that, John was editor-in-chief of The Observer, leading The Guardian’s sister Sunday publication during a transformative decade in UK and global politics, including the Brexit referendum. Under his leadership, The Observer published Carole Cadwalladr’s investigation exposing the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal. Throughout his career at the Guardian and Observer, John was responsible for coverage areas including media, sports, travel and culture.

He is based in Sacramento and since last year has been California editor at State Affairs, a startup Politico-Pro-competitor.

A former colleague described him as follows: “John has a rare combination of sharp news sense and a real flair for the presentation of longer feature ideas. He was a terrific leader in the newsroom — hands on, loyal, great with people, inspiring, low ego, calm under pressure, a pleasure to write for.”

In his new Standard role, John will oversee our daily news report and work closely with section editors to make sure we shine on the news of the day while delivering storytelling that results in real-world impact. He will play a key role in our efforts to innovate in the tone, techniques, and technology behind our journalism—all in service of creating a thriving local journalism outfit whose work resonates well beyond its home city.

John will report to me and his first day is Monday, March 30. I hope you’ll join me in welcoming him to San Francisco and the team at The Standard.

Kevin
