Heather Kelly

The San Francisco Standard editor in chief Kevin Delaney sent out the following to the staff:

Hello Standard colleagues —

I’m happy to announce that Heather Kelly, most recently on the SF tech reporting team at The Washington Post, is joining us as technology editor.

At the Post, Heather covered the ways technology shapes everyday life, from family and finances to education, health, and entertainment. Her reporting ranged from investigations (a Catholic group that spent millions on app data tracking gay priests; school apps that track students from classroom to bathroom) to sharp features on the human side of the tech beat (parents’ desperate efforts to curb screen time, customers quietly refusing AI, and how she found her own stolen Honda Civic using a Bluetooth tracker). Before the Post, Heather spent seven years at CNN as a writer and editor, and before that was a senior editor at VentureBeat and an associate editor at Macworld.

Heather was “one of the sharpest folks in the office, very incisive and hilarious,” recounts a former Post colleague. “Her Slack messages read like Silicon Valley standup and cultural commentary.”

At The Standard, Heather will lead our tech coverage team, which includes Zara, Caroline, and an additional reporter we’re looking to bring on soon. Their mission is to cover the world’s most consequential technology ecosystem from its epicenter, helping our readers understand the industry reshaping their city and their lives.

Heather’s first day is Tuesday, April 28. Please join me in welcoming her.

Best,

Kevin
