We’re pleased to announce two important leadership appointments within our China team. Casey Hall has been promoted to Bureau Chief and Senior Companies Correspondent in Shanghai, and Eduardo Baptista has taken on a new role as Greater China Chief Technology Correspondent.
Casey, who eased into her new role back in April, is an Australian journalist who has been based in Shanghai for 19 years and has spent most of that time chronicling the rise of China’s middle class and the country’s growing importance to global consumer brands. She joined Reuters’ Shanghai bureau as China Consumer Correspondent in 2022, just as the city was beginning a gruelling, months‑long lockdown under China’s zero‑COVID policy. Since then, she has devoted much of her reporting life to telling stories of how macroeconomic trends, global trade and geopolitics shape the everyday lives and livelihoods of people in the world’s second‑largest economy.
When she’s not working, Casey enjoys Taylor Swift-themed living room dance parties with her husband and three daughters and crocheting more toys, clothes and blankets than she knows what to do with.
In his new role, Eddie will lead the stellar Greater China team from the front, editing and reporting from Beijing on one of the world’s most dynamic and aggressive tech centers driving the global economy.
He will report to Ken Li, with a dotted line to Kevin Krolicki and work closely with Fanny Potkin on the initiatives file.
Eddie, who started his new job last week, joined Reuters’ China team in 2021, covering the country’s zero-COVID era through stories on AI-powered surveillance, a concealed surge in cremations and the protests that preceded China’s reopening.
Since then, his reporting has spanned artificial intelligence, semiconductors, military technology, space, industrial policy and China’s trade with North Korea. He has helped lead Reuters coverage of the rise of DeepSeek, investigated global technology supply chains and worked on international assignments in South America and South Korea.
Eddie was part of Reuters teams that this year won a SOPA Award for Excellence in Business Reporting and received an honorable mention for Excellence in Technology Reporting.
Before joining Reuters, Eddie was a reporter at the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong and freelanced for publications including The Economist, Foreign Policy and Nikkei Asian Review. He first moved to China in 2017 to pursue a master’s degree in China studies at Peking University, after earning a BA in History from the University of Cambridge.
He speaks five languages fluently, including Mandarin and Korean. Outside work, he enjoys running, watching basketball and football, and serving as butler-in-chief to a family of cats.
