Reuters North Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australasia News Editor Soyoung Kim recently shared the below note with staff, announcing the appointment of Praveen Menon as Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific bureau chief:
Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that Praveen has been appointed Bureau Chief of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific.
Praveen will drive our coverage of the region as it navigates rising trade and geopolitical tensions between the United States, Australia’s main security ally, and China, its largest trade partner, and the world’s second-largest economy.
During his 14-year tenure at Reuters, Praveen has worked in various regions including the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Australasia, and covered some of the world’s biggest stories.
First arriving in Sydney in 2022, Praveen spearheaded coverage of Australia’s corporate sector as team leader for companies and finance. Last year, he was tasked with chronicling Australia’s failed national referendum to recognize Aboriginal people in the constitution. He stepped in as acting Bureau Chief earlier this year.
Before arriving in Australia, he was the New Zealand bureau chief leading the coverage of events including the Christchurch terror attack, the White Island volcanic eruption, and the zero-tolerance COVID response of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
Prior to that, Praveen was bureau chief for Malaysia & Brunei, guiding the Kuala Lumpur bureau through some of the biggest stories in the region including the missing MH370 airliner and the assassination of Kim Jong Nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, at the Kuala Lumpur airport.
Praveen started his career at newspapers in India. He joined Reuters in 2010 as an equities correspondent in Dubai and has also had stints covering the Arab Spring and reported for Reuters from Afghanistan in 2014.
Praveen will remain based in Sydney and will report to me.
Please join me in congratulating Praveen on his new role.
Best,
Soyoung Kim
