Reuters Washington pictures editor Jessica Koscielniak and Washington bureau chief Craig Timberg shared the below note with staff:
Colleagues,
We are thrilled to announce that Evan Vucci will join Reuters exceptional U.S. photo staff in March as a senior photojournalist based in Washington, D.C.
Evan is one of the most respected photojournalists in Washington and across our industry, known for both his extraordinary work and his humble, highly collegial nature. An award-winning photographer and the longtime chief photographer for the Associated Press in Washington, Evan brings more than two decades of experience covering many of the era’s defining political moments. His unflappable presence has provided immediacy, depth and clarity to every U.S. administration since George W. Bush. Few photojournalists know Washington politics better.
In 2024, Evan captured the historic and widely published photograph of then-candidate Donald Trump raising his fist moments after surviving an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. Days later he was in the Oval Office, photographing President Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential election.
He was part of the AP team awarded the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for their powerful coverage following the death of George Floyd.
Evan also earned a National Edward R. Murrow Award for documentary video work while embedded with a U.S. Army platoon during a 15-month combat tour in Mosul, Iraq.
Evan’s reputation for trust-building, collaboration and political expertise will strengthen our Washington file. He will work closely with our text and video teams to sharpen coordination and planning at the White House under Reuters One Newsroom strategy.
A committed mentor, Evan has guided photographers at all stages of their careers — staff and freelance alike.
Please join us in welcoming Evan to Reuters.
