Anup Kaphle
Rest of World, which covers technology beyond the Western bubble, has promoted Anup Kaphle as its first editor in chief.
Kaphle joined Rest of World as executive editor in February 2020 and oversaw its launch just as the Covid-19 pandemic began. Kaphle led the publication’s editorial strategy from its 2020 launch to nearly a thousand stories published today, covering 94 countries in eight languages.
Since he joined, Kaphle has guided Rest of World’s focus, making labor one of the primary areas of coverage. Under his direction, Rest of World has published impactful stories on the extreme lengths companies in Asia went to manufacture during the pandemic, and how the platform work model is reshaping entire economies, sectors, lifestyles, and livelihoods.
“From day one, Anup has proven his strength as a dynamic and innovative leader for Rest of World, always willing to roll up his sleeves no matter what we needed in our startup years,” said founder and CEO Sophie Schmidt in a statement. “His relentless focus on the quality of our stories and on our commitment to do right by freelance journalists globally has built a solid foundation for our future. I couldn’t be more excited to see him step into this new role.”
Prior to joining Rest of World in 2020, Kaphle spent two years in his home country of Nepal as the editor in chief of The Kathmandu Post. Before that, he was the executive editor at Roads & Kingdoms and deputy foreign editor at BuzzFeed News.
He began his career in international news at The Washington Post, where he spent more than five years, and as the foreign digital editor, oversaw production of award-winning multimedia projects.
