Joanna Chiu, an award-winning correspondent and author who has covered China for more than a decade, is joining Rest of World as its China editor.
A story on its website states, “Joanna comes to us from the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper, where she served as British Columbia bureau chief. She played a key part in their coverage of the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wangzhou and the subsequent diplomatic crisis. Before that, Joanna served as the China and Mongolia correspondent for Agence France-Presse. She has written for outlets like the South China Morning Post, The Economist, Foreign Policy and the Associated Press.
“Joanna chairs the not-for-profit NüVoices network to support women and minorities in China-related issues, and served as the research lead on reports for the Committee to Protect Journalists and PEN America on China’s social media and internet censorship systems.
“Joanna has also written a book, China Unbound, which examines the political and economic impact of China’s global rise. The book won the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing in 2022. In 2023, Joanna won the CFWIJ Kathy Gannon Legacy Award for Distinguished Reporting for her body of work on China.”
