Quartz editor in chief Dan Hirschhorn and executive editor Susan Howson sent out the following on Friday:

Team Quartz,

We’re excited to announce the addition of two new journalists to the newsroom, as well as an important new leadership role for one of our colleagues.

This is just the beginning of an ambitious audience growth plan for Quartz in 2024. We are already bringing more readers to QZ.com than just a few short weeks ago. It’s imperative we build upon and accelerate that very, very early growth. To that end, we will immediately redouble our efforts to increase our newsroom publishing, metabolism, and audience focus, while we also recruit additional reporters and hire a journalist for the critical role of Breaking News Editor. In the meantime:

Gabriela Riccardi becomes News Editor, effective immediately. Gabby has worn many hats at Quartz over the last few years. Reporting directly to Dan in her new role, she will be a key leader in shaping, driving, and executing our hourly and daily news coverage. She will manage reporters, assign and edit stories, help develop and implement our evolving digital strategy, and work to ensure our journalism connects with the widest and most engaged audiences possible. Gabby joined the newsroom from the business side in 2022, earning instant respect from her new peers as a supportive and collaborative teammate. Gabby first joined Quartz in 2021 as a creative strategist. She has also worked at The Atlantic and Bloomberg. She got her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Syracuse.

Bruce Gil joins Quartz as a Staff Writer covering Breaking News. Bruce comes to us from The Messenger, where he was a breaking news reporter covering business and finance. Among other roles, he has been a digital reporter at Frontline PBS and a production assistant for the three-part series “After Ayotzinapa” by Reveal, from The Center for Investigative Reporting. A Las Vegas native, he got his bachelor’s degree in journalism from UNLV and a master’s from CUNY’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, with a concentration in Spanish-language journalism and health and science reporting.

Britney Nguyen joins Quartz as a Staff Writer covering Breaking News. Britney has experience reporting on both technology and business news. She covered trending tech news, tech policy, and AI as a reporter at Business Insider, and has also covered breaking news for Forbes. A North Carolina native, she got her bachelor’s degree in journalism and contemporary European studies from UNC Chapel Hill.

Please join us in congratulating Gabby on her new role, and in welcoming Bruce and Britney to Quartz.

— Dan and Susan
