Politico tax reporter Guggenheim moves to policy beat

Politico reporter Benjamin Guggenheim is now cover policy stories out of Congress.

He had been covering the IRS and tax policy.

In his new beat, capacity, he will report on the personalities and dynamics governing the most important committees in Congress, such as the tax writing House Ways and Means Committee, the House Energy and Commerce Committee and related committees in the Senate.

Guggenheim won the National Press Foundation’s Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for for Distinguished Reporting of Congress in 2024 for his expose on the lobbying forces that have shaped the 401(k) retirement system. He was also a finalist for the 2025 Livingston award recognizing excellence in national reporting by journalists under 35.

He previously worked as a Congress reporter at Tax Notes, where he wrote about everything from 401(k)s to the Inflation Reduction Act. Earlier, his beat was the U.S. Tax Court, where he broke stories on disputes involving celebrities, including Charlie Sheen’s fight with the IRS over his tax debt.

Before that, Guggenheim was a coordinator on the award-winning Covid-19 tracking team at the New York Times.
