Outgoing Fortune CEO Alan Murray sent out the following to the staff on Tuesday:
All, It is with pride and confidence that I can announce that Fortune’s new CEO is Anastasia Nyrkovskaya, our Chief Finance and Strategy Officer. (The New York Times has just reported this news.) She will officially succeed me when I step down at the end of this month.
I am so pleased to pass the baton to Anastasia. She is the right person to lead Fortune and is well prepared, having been at my side for the last five years. She is the architect of our strategy to diversify revenue streams, which has enabled Fortune to maintain strong revenue growth since our independence and to record three straight years of profits. Take that in for a moment, because our strength and growth are rare in this challenging climate, for legacy media outlets and startups alike.
Anastasia will lead an executive team that has driven Fortune’s success and will continue to do so. As Editor in Chief, Alyson Shontell has substantially grown the size and quality of Fortune’s audience while maintaining the standards, depth, and integrity of our journalism. Michael Schneider is leading one of the most successful ad sales teams in the business. And our prestigious executive communities and events are regarded as without peers in the media world. Fortune is hiring new talent across the organization and incubating new businesses to power continued growth. This is an exciting moment for Fortune, and the future looks very bright with Anastasia at the helm.
I will be cheering on Anastasia, and all of you, when I leave Fortune at the end of the month. I will share more about my plans at that time.
See you shortly at the Town Hall, where we will come together and hear from Anastasia. Please join me in congratulating her on her appointment as CEO! — Alan
