NYT Opinion hires Stromberg as editor for politics, economics

Lauren Kelley, deputy op-ed editor for news at The New York Times, sent out the following announcement:

I’m thrilled to announce that Stephen Stromberg will join Opinion’s guest essay team to work on coverage of politics, economics and the law. He will solicit, assign and edit fast-turnaround pieces, long-term projects and opinion features.

Stephen spent almost two decades at The Washington Post, making himself indispensable — as an editor, a writer, an editorial board member and, ultimately, the deputy editor of the Opinion section. His wide experience in opinion journalism includes editing tight-deadline analysis and longer-form investigative journalism, experimenting in new media, managing an audience team and writing columns and editorials, with prize-winning results. The editorial he wrote during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot was part of the package that won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. As an editor, he supervised David E. Hoffman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial series, The Annals of Autocracy.

In addition to covering six presidential elections, two of them as lead politics editorial writer, and interviewing presidents and presidential candidates (sadly, you’ll never get to read the endorsement he wrote in 2024), Stephen has written a little something about everything under the sun, from cellphone use on airplanes to the repossession business to the retirement of the greatest sumo wrestler of all time. And that’s not including the pieces he’s edited.

Before joining The Post, Stephen covered U.S. politics and economics for The Economist. Raised in Los Angeles, he began writing professionally as an intern for The Los Angeles Times’s editorial page. Stephen is now based in Washington, where he and his wife, the Atlantic columnist Alexandra Petri, are raising two children.
