NY Times names Karaian news director for business

Jason Karaian

New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent out the following on Thursday:

We are very happy to announce that Jason Karaian will be joining the Business department as news director.

In his two years as editor of DealBook, Jason has played a central role in the expansion of the newsletter’s editorial team and the increase in its audience, which is well more than double what it was when he started. He is a quick editor and writer with deep experience in business journalism. Jason has a keen eye for graphics and a mind for data analysis.

Jason, with Greg Schmidt and Will Davis, will lead the team that produces our daily briefing — its planning, execution and evolution. He will remain in London, where he will use the time zone advantage to get an early start on news and launch the briefing early, working closely with Kevin Granville, our London editor. Mohammed Hadi, in his new role as a deputy editor, will continue to oversee our strong desk and help lead our news and enterprise coverage.

A genuine markets geek, Jason is always up for a chat about S&P 500 trivia, accounting arcana and the footnotes of financial statements. And charts — the guy loves charts.

Prior to coming to The Times — a month before the pandemic — Jason worked at Quartz, where he was senior European correspondent and later global finance and economics editor. Before that he spent more than 10 years at various outposts within The Economist Group, covering finance, business and more. Along the way, he wrote a book about C.F.O.s, published by The Economist. He started out life as a macroeconomic analyst, but found he was better at writing than forecasting.

He will start his new job the week of March 14.
