New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent out the following on Wednesday:
I’m thrilled to announce that Jason Karaian is now a deputy Business editor.
As our news director for the past two years, Jason has upped the urgency of our business report. He’s made us faster and smarter about what news to cover and how to frame it. He has made our live coverage, especially of economic news, more efficient, more comprehensive and more fluid. He makes complexity comprehensible through words, visuals and fresh formats.
And really, who doesn’t like working with Jason?
“If he were a cricket player, we’d call Jason an ‘all rounder,’” says Mo Hadi, deputy Business editor. “He can do pretty much anything, and he does it all really well — from handling breaking news (often while we sleep soundly) to coordinating live coverage to editing smart and insightful stories — and it’s truly excellent that he’s going to take on more responsibility with the Business desk. We are lucky to be able to call him a colleague.”
In his new role, Jason will help oversee and strategize about our corporate coverage across the desk. Looking more closely at companies will be crucial for readers as interest rates drop and as a new administration and new policies change the landscape of domestic and global commerce. Jason’s understanding of corporate finance and leadership – he wrote a book about the history of the CFO – makes him perfect for this role. And, as you all know, Jason is a great collaborator.
Jason joined The Times in 2020 as the editor of the DealBook newsletter, which vastly increased its subscribers during his two years of leadership. Before that he was a correspondent and then global finance and economics editor at Quartz. Earlier in his career he worked at The Economist Group, writing for the European edition of CFO magazine and the Economist Intelligence Unit.
He grew up in New Mexico, graduated from Northwestern University and honed his data and statistical skills as a macroeconomic analyst in Chicago.
