New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent out the following on Thursday:
We’re delighted to announce that Joe Rennison will be joining The Times to cover financial markets and trading, a beat that ranges from chronicling the vagaries of the stock market to explaining the often-inscrutable trading decisions of Wall Street insiders.
Joe comes to us from the Financial Times, where he has covered the beat for the past seven years, most recently as the paper’s deputy U.S. markets editor. Joe has written about every aspect of markets, from derivatives to treasuries to junk bonds, and followed the rise of electronic trading. Over the past year, he was a part of the FT’s team covering the meme stock craze. In particular, his story on the hedge fund and trading giant Citadel showed how markets reporting goes well beyond the daily ups and downs of trading.
Joe is joining us at a pivotal moment — just as the Federal Reserve embarks on its campaign to combat inflation by raising interest rates sharply, stirring fears of a recession and causing new volatility in markets.
He will be part of Preeta’s team but work with reporters and editors across Business, including the daily briefing, to cover financial markets in all their glory and explain the intricacies and broad relevance of stock and bond moves to our readers in the months ahead.
He is a graduate of the London School of Economics, with a degree in philosophy, logic and scientific method. Joe will start on July 11, based in New York.
