NY Times hires DePillis as an economics reporter

Lydia DePillis

New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent out the following announcement on Monday:

We’re excited to announce that Lydia DePillis will be joining the Business desk as an economics reporter.

Lydia brings a blend of economics acumen, writing flair and energy that make her a valued addition to the team. Since August 2019, she has been a reporter at ProPublica, investigating topics including the inequities — between large businesses and small, between Black-owned businesses and others — in the government’s pandemic relief efforts. She previously worked at The Washington City Paper, The New Republic, The Washington Post, The Houston Chronicle and CNN.

She is a graduate of Columbia, where she wrote for The Daily Spectator and a campus magazine, The Blue and White, and had internships at Slate and The New York Observer.

Many Times colleagues are already acquainted with Lydia, either from working in the same newsroom with her or from simply admiring her work. Rich Barbieri, who was her boss at CNN, says: “Lydia is versatile: She can cover a jobs report, go deep on a subject and do field reporting. She enjoys talking to people about how policy and the vagaries of economic forces trickle down. She is a genuinely good person and a pleasure to work with, earnest but likes to laugh.”
