New York Times newsroom audience director Anna Dubenko sent out the following:
Please join me in welcoming Meg Ely to The Times as deputy for off-platform audience.
Meg comes from Bloomberg News, where she was managing editor for audience development. She brings deep experience connecting news consumers with high-quality journalism amid a changing digital landscape.
At The Times, Meg will oversee two critical newsroom teams: Search, led by Morgan Greenwald, and Social, led by Alexa Díaz. Editors on those teams are expert at using platform and audience signals to ensure that Times journalism is visible and compelling as these external platforms evolve. She’ll also ensure that our @nytimes handles reach people who get most of their news from social platforms or in video, a growing segment of the news-consuming market.
Meg joins as the newsroom Audience team is expanding its strategic leadership model. The new structure brings Search and Social together in an off-platform pod under one deputy, alongside other leaders focused on coverage, on-platform engagement, community and strategy and enterprise. This model is designed to strengthen coordination, share audience insights across the newsroom and beyond and connect day-to-day programming with longer-term audience strategy.
Before Bloomberg, Meg was a social editor for The New Yorker after starting her career at The Washington Post. We’re excited to welcome her to The Times and look forward to the perspective and leadership she’ll bring to this important work.
