Myers joins NY Times biz news desk to cover misinformation

Steve Myers

Joe Plambeck, an editor on the New York Times business news desk, as well as technology editor Pui-Wing Tam and business editor Ellen Pollock, sent out the following:

We’re excited to announce that Steve Myers is joining our group. The timing couldn’t be better. Steve, one of The Times’s most experienced foreign correspondents, is an expert on the Kremlin, having reported from the Moscow bureau for years. (He wrote a book on Putin, too.) He is also an expert on China, where he just finished a distinguished tour as Beijing bureau chief, contributing an article in the package awarded the Pulitzer Prize for public service last year.

“Steve was built for this role,” said Adrienne Carter, who edited him in Asia. “A natural skeptic with an innate curiosity and a global perspective, he has long covered the corrosive influence of disinformation and propaganda — in both their analog and digital forms. He is also a generous colleague, eager to help or embrace a new challenge.”

Steve hasn’t officially started his new job, but he’s already off and running on the beat. Along with Stuart Thompson, he delivered an authoritative look at the web of lies the Kremlin is using to prop up its invasion of Ukraine. While Steve is moving back to the United States for this assignment, and will be based in San Francisco, we expect his work on misinformation to span both national and international developments.
