Liana Baker, managing editor of U.S. deals at Bloomberg News, sent out the following on Friday:
We’re excited to announce that Matt Monks has been promoted to Team Leader on the US Deals team. He’ll continue to work closely with me overseeing the team’s priorities and strategy to ensure we’re getting our scoops and smart analysis out as quickly as possible.
Matt has been on the deals team for the past decade as an editor and reporter covering financial services and energy dealmaking. He’s helped break deals including ICE/Black Knight, BMO’s talks to buy Bank of the West and several scoops on Robinhood during the meme stock frenzy of last year. As an editor, he’s sent out copy and headlines on some of the biggest deals our desk produces with a cool head and the speed to beat the competition.
As Matt transitions to his new role and picks up more managerial and editing responsibilities, Jan-Henrik Foerster in London will help cover financial services deals globally.
It’s no surprise that Matt thrives under pressure because he’s a US Army veteran. He was a truck mechanic in the army and served on active duty in South Korea about 14 miles from the DMZ.
Matt started his career in journalism as a paper boy for the Journal Inquirer in Manchester, Connecticut, and worked for news organizations including Dow Jones, Crain’s and American Banker where he joined us from in 2012. A father of two, he loves Hall & Oates and Harry Styles. He’s not only a big music fan but he’s been known to perform acoustic guitar at open mic nights near his home in Sleepy Hollow, NY.
Please join us in congratulating Matt in his new role!
