Matsakis departs Semafor to start newsletter and freelance

Semafor journalist Louise Matsakis has left the news organization to freelance and start a newsletter called “You May Also Like.

The newsletter covers tech, e-commerce and China.

She was a technology reporter and a deputy news editor with a focus on Asia news coverage for Semafor.

Before Semafor, Matsakis had been on the NBC News tech investigations team, covering Amazon and TikTok. She has been at Rest of World as senior editor covering technology. She also worked at Wired.

She wrote predominantly about technology and the internet. She used to be an editor at Motherboard, VICE Media’s technology and science site. Before that, she was an editor at Mashable.

Matsakis is a graduate of New York University.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
