Marks, Washington Post cybersecurity newsletter writer, is departing

Joseph Marks

Joseph Marks, the anchor of The Cybersecurity 202 newsletter at The Washington Post, is leaving the organization.

He has been at the Post since December 2018.

Marks previously was at NextGov, where he wass a senior cybersecurty reporter focused on issues including privacy, government cyber authorities, Russian hacking battles and encryption.

Previously, he was a cybersecurity reporter for Politico, where he regularly authored that publication’s Morning Cybersecurity newsletter. He also has covered patent and copyright trends for Bloomberg BNA and federal litigation for Law360. A

Marks spent two years at the Grand Forks Herald in North Dakota, where he exhaustively covered the University of North Dakota’s lawsuit against the NCAA to retain its Native American team nickname.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s in international affairs from Georgetown University.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
