Longtime FT editor Lamont is departing

James Lamont

James Lamont, former director of strategic partnerships and board director, will leave the Financial Times at the end of the year to become as chief executive of Norway’s DN Media Group.

Lamont had a 25-year career at the FT during which time he was a management board director for a decade and Managing Editor for eight years, helping to hire a generation of FT journalists. He played a crucial role in the digital transformation of the FT newsroom and in ensuring the success of Nikkei’s ownership of the FT since it acquired the publisher in 2015.

He was bureau chief in South Asia and Southern Africa, as well as leading the World News Desk in London. In his most recent role, his portfolio spanned the partnership with Nikkei, technology innovation, education, financial markets data, FT Ventures investments, and the audience expansion in growth markets such as India.

Roula Khalaf, FT editor, said: “James has a highly accomplished, versatile and international  record at the FT over 25 years. I am grateful for all his contributions.”

Lamont joined the FT in 2001 from the post of editor of a leading South African business newspaper owned by Dublin-based Independent News & Media. Before that, he was deputy editor of the Middle East Times in Cairo.
