How Sifted develops its editorial staff

Amy Lewin

Jacob Granger of The Journalism.co.uk podcast spoke with Amy Lewin, the editor of tech news site Sifted, about developing staff.

Sifted is four years old and covers startups and technology in Europe and is backed by the Financial Times. As a small company, Sifted has flexibility for staffers to take on new responsibilities.

“We don’t have the same sort of rigid structures in place” as others, said Lewin. “…We need to hang on to people as best as we can.”

Sifted has three tracks for different jobs. For a reporter, it includes being a problem solver, having integrity with sources and working with data, among other items.

“We want our people to become famous,” said Lewin, which includes being invited to speak at conferences and having a large LinkedIn following.
