Rich DeMuro, the tech reporter for KTLA-TV Channel 5 in Los Angeles, spoke with the JSA+Partners Talking Points substack about his job.
Here is an excerpt:
Radio provides an opportunity to expand upon his TV coverage, including longer-form interviews and real-time listener call-ins. But Substack, which he’s been an early pioneer on since a 2019 introduction to the platform’s CEO, is where he feels the deepest connections happen.
“Substack offers the most intimate connection with audiences because they’re choosing to subscribe to the content and they’re actually asking to have you in their inbox,” Rich told us. “TV is very universal–with stories that I think everyone should know, even if they’re not a techie–and radio is a bit more engaged because people there are tuning in, but they’re still drive-by. Substack feels more intentional.”
That intimacy isn’t a buzzword for Rich; it’s a full-time job backed by over 15 years of serving as Southern California’s favorite tech guru. He says his “secret weapon” is an inbox that overflows with messages from listeners asking for advice–every one of which he responds to. Often, this serves as an early alert for emerging developments in the tech world, and he tends to hear about email outages or security scams days before mainstream media picks up the trail.
