The Houston Chronicle has named staff writer Octavia Johnson as its new transportation reporter.
In her new role, Johnson will go beyond typical traffic updates to explore the human impact of Houston’s transportation challenges. She will examine the city’s car culture, engage readers in discussions about surviving the daily commute, and investigate the reasons behind the difficulties city and regional planners face in providing alternative transportation options.
“I’m really excited about this beat,” said Johnson, who plans to include all Houstonians in her coverage, whether they walk, bike or drive to their destinations.
“We’re taking traditional transportation coverage, but we’re incorporating more for the residents, commuters and the people who drive around Houston every day,” Johnson said.
Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree from UNC-Pembroke and a master’s degree from Norfolk State University.
