Health Affairs announced that Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil will leave his role at the end of the year.

On Jan. 6, 2025, Weil will become senior vice president for public policy at AARP.

Health Affairs has changed significantly during Weil’s more than 10-year tenure. In 2022, Health Affairs launched a new open access journal, “Health Affairs Scholar,” and turned the widely read “Health Affairs Blog” into the indexed “Health Affairs Forefront.”

Health Affairs now has five podcasts, including A Health Podyssey, which Weil has hosted since 2020, with more than 275,000 total downloads over 200 episodes. Health Affairs launched a membership program, Insider, which includes member-only specialty newsletters and events.

During Weil’s tenure, Health Affairs led the way on equity, now hosting its third cohort of fellows advancing scholarship on health equity. The flagship journal retains its role as the leading scholarly journal in its field while achieving significant growth in its Impact Factor.

“I am proud of all the Health Affairs team has accomplished over the past decade. I am confident Health Affairs will continue to lead an evidence-based health policy discourse well into the future,” said Weil in a statement.
