Globe and Mail taps Postelnyak to cover consumer affairs

Melissa Stasiuk, head of newsroom development at The Globe and Mail, sent out the following last month:

We’re pleased to welcome Mariya Postelnyak as our consumer affairs reporter, starting today.

Mariya is making a quick return to the Toronto newsroom, after her stellar run as a news reporter in our 2024 summer program (including a trip to Pennsylvania to report on the Trump shooting). Prior to that, Mariya had cut her Globe and Mail teeth in an academic internship in 2023, as a reporter in ROB. Now, she takes on one of the new beats on the expanded personal finance team, where she will help Canadians navigate our fast-changing consumer landscape.

“The chance to shape a new beat is exhilarating – especially when it comes to a topic like consumer affairs, where you have the power to help Canadians tackle decisions shaping their finances,” Mariya says. “I can’t wait to start brainstorming ideas for this beat.”

Outside of her past experience at The Globe, Mariya has worked with CBC’s The National and has written for Maclean’s, Toronto Life, BlogTO and The Houston Chronicle. She holds a Master of Journalism degree from Toronto Metropolitan University, and she is multilingual, speaking English, French, Ukrainian, Russian and Spanish.

Away from the newsroom, you’ll find Mariya lost in a thriller novel, or hosting Catan dinner parties for her friends and trying out new recipes. (“Usually something with a lot of cayenne pepper.”)
