The Financial Times has hired Patrick Foulis as a contributing editor.

Foulis will write a monthly column on how geopolitics is transforming markets and the economy, drawing on his extensive expertise in foreign affairs and business.

Foulis previously held senior roles at The Economist, including foreign editor, business affairs editor and Schumpeter columnist. He began his career in banking before moving into journalism, starting as a writer and then deputy editor for Lex, the FT’s flagship investment column. He is the author of a forthcoming book on the future of globalisation and a Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

“Patrick is a brilliant thinker and wonderful writer who understands the intersection of business, finance and global politics like few others,” said FT editor in chief Roula Khalaf in a statement. “I am thrilled that he is now joining the FT’s unrivalled line-up of columnists.”
