Fortune union: Layoffs subject to negotiation

The NewsGuild of New York, which represents Fortune editorial staffers, issued the following statement on Wednesday:

Our members are paying the price as Fortune Media leadership once again stumbles their way through yet another change in corporate strategy.

Throughout our history as a union, Fortune Media management has repeatedly violated our members’ rights, and this latest round of layoffs is no exception. We abruptly had to say goodbye to dozens of hard-working journalists who have dedicated themselves to our newsroom—despite working in less-than-ideal conditions that have included an aggressive 5-day return-to-office policy, constant management misguidance, and an embrace of AI-generated content by the company. This all comes as Fortune management has refused to consistently engage in meaningful contract negotiations.

Whether Fortune likes it or not, we are a unionized newsroom, and layoffs are a mandatory subject of bargaining. We will be vigorously fighting to protect the rights of our members.
