Forbes faces long work hours, low pay and a lack of promotions

Claire Atkinson of Insider writes about the culture at Forbes, where the staff has complained about long working long hours for low pay, a lack of promotions, and workplace inequity.

Atkinson writes, “While many businesses have suffered from the “Great Resignation,” Forbes has lost scores of top staff — including its head of communications, head of digital, and multiple editors and reporters — during the pandemic, many of them over workplace conditions.

“Last year, editorial staffers unionized, launching with a mission statement that said Forbes had a ‘top-down structure’ that ‘allows exploitative labor practices.’

“‘Many of us have no job security, receive no overtime pay and our requests for raises largely go unheard,’ it read.

“Forbes, for its part, says it’s been hiring a slew of new staff. It says there are many women in leadership at the 450-person company, 30 percent of new editorial hires were people of color, and more than 30 percent of its promotions went to people of color in 2021.”
