Russell Sherman of the “Press Profiles” podcast interviewed Financial Times U.S. finance editor James Fontanella-Khan about his job and his career.

“I never thought about being a finance person or finance editor in my life,” said Fontanella-Khan, who joined the FT nearly 20 years to focus on foreign coverage.

With his new position, he said that the FT is reuniting mergers and acquisitions coverage with other finance coverage, such as banking. “Part of it is bringing the dots together with various parts of finance,” said Fontanella-Khan, who previously covered M&A for a decade.

“We’ve been very good at bringing everybody together,” he said. “We all have our strengths and weaknesses.” But he says the FT has more of a lean structure that allows it to communicate across the globe better.

“We’re very good at what we do on a global footprint,” Fontanella-Khan.
