Joe Hood and Reid Southwick of The Financial Post issued the following:

Dear reader,

The West is part of the national conversation in a way we haven’t seen in years.

Investment is pouring into the B.C. coast to build infrastructure to ship more liquefied natural gas overseas. There’s excitement in Alberta about a possible new export pipeline for oil after years of disappointment. And Saskatchewan’s uranium exports are booming, helping to fuel a global renaissance in nuclear power. Global markets are hungry for Canadian energy, and this time there is a realization across the country that this interest presents not just an economic opportunity, but one that’s crucial to our national sovereignty, too.

At the Financial Post, we believe there is an urgent need to understand this moment.

That’s why we are proud to be launching the Financial Post Western Bureau, a team of on-the-ground reporters in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon that will concentrate exclusively on business and economic coverage in Western Canada. They’ll be tasked with bringing an unmatched focus to the companies, the leaders, the trends and the ideas that are reshaping the region — and the country — at this pivotal juncture.

Western issues have always had a home at the Financial Post, but this new endeavour with our sister newsrooms in the region represents a long-term commitment to bringing authentic Western experiences and voices to the national conversation in a way that no other Canadian business publication can.

Whether it’s the next big takeover battle, a multi-billion dollar nuclear deal or the latest trends in jobs or real estate, our reporting team is out to set the agenda in the West.

Energy, as we’ve said, is a big part of this equation. To that end, we are introducing a premium weekly newsletter, exclusive to subscribers, called FP West: Energy Insider. As the name suggests, it will bring you behind closed doors in one of Canada’s most crucial economic sectors.
