Lachlan Cartwright of Breaker writes about candidates for the role of New York Times business editor.
Cartwright reports, “Breaker has learned one dark horse candidate is former Wall Street Journal Journalist Dennis Berman, who until recently was president and publisher of The Free Press, and formerly finance and business editor at the Journal (Berman did not respond to a request for comment.
“Deputy Business Editor Pui-Wing Tam, who is also the Times’ tech editor, remains the favorite candidate amongst the business desks’ rank and file. Tam, who is based in San Francisco, is said to be prepared to move east for the role and has the backing of Executive Editor Joe Kahn.
“Kahn has been meeting with BizDay reporters and has talked about how important video is to the section and to the future of the paper, according to people familiar with the situation.
“D.C. based Economic Editor Deborah Solomon is also well-liked internally and was seen in the Times’ 620 Eighth Avenue newsroom on Monday as Managing Editor Carolyn Ryan ramps up interviews with candidates.
“But the favorite for the plum role remains Opinion Editor Katie Kingsbury, who has led a video resurgence of the opinion department and has the backing of publisher A.G. Sulzberger.”
